you kind of answered the question , the drive for  accumulating money ( that
is a symbol for the fat of the land ) is what lead peoples to loose
integrity and prepare their own destruction   in what they are doing( see
the rise and fall of old civilisations.)
 to store is certainly a survival behavior in humans but only when it is
shared among the tribe.  When some clans are trying to get fat at the
expense of others or of  the land ,it is compromising the survival of the
whole ( war and depletion of ressources). The north american dream is
threatening the survival of the human species . ( they replace the europeans
colonisators who them selves replace the romans etc...)  .
The scale of the racketing of the fat of the land that is happening now with
globalisation will bring more drastic fall.( desertification being one of
the most  effective factor) and make peoples obese too.
