Since Atkins can severely decrease the income of the medical community (by
preventing many illnesses), then he is public enemy number one of the medical
community.

If they do not attack someone, then it is likely that they think that person's
methods will only increase illness, and thereby their income.   So, those are
the last people they want to attack.

Just note how many advertisements are now found on TV for pharmaceutical drugs.
Also note that inexpensive non-patentable drugs like alcohol and tobacco can no
longer be advertised on television - only expensive patented ones.
