In "The Schwarzbein Principle", the author talks about the relationship of
serotonin and high insulin levels. This is the reason for many people that
high carb foods tend to be comfort foods. The problem is a consistent high
level of insulin depletes serotonin levels and it becomes a vicious cycle.
Have you ever seen anyone eat a hard boiled egg for comfort when dealing
with a stressful situation? A former significant other suffered from major
depression, which coincidentally started or took a major turn for the worse
when she adopted a mostly vegetarian diet with only occasional fish. She ate
tons of pasta and ice cream was one of her comfort foods. Obviously, many
factors contribute to depression, but if serotonin is part of the issue,
then diet would definitely be part of the answer.
