Black pepper's not in the same botanical family, so your mom's reaction is
due to something besides the offender in nightshades.  I rewad once that
mold grows readily on black pepper.

Not sure what you mean here, but the "chinese" peppers I'm familiar with
are--at least I think they are--in the nightshade family.

I really hope I'm not one of those people because I would really hate to
give up some of my favorite foods.
