The Russians had the Unangan hunting only otters and they lost the knowledge
to live a hunter-gatherer lifestyle. By the late 1700s, the Russians were
failing to provide the food supplies that the Unangan had come to rely on,
and they rebelled against the Russians.
The mummies were living on foods supplied by their Russian overlords who
were getting rich while starving and brutalizing the Unangan.

Best Wishes,
Ron

Ok, so the plot thickens slightly as, per the study itself, three of the
five of the mummies from Unangan hunter gatherers from the Aleutian Islands
were found to have clogged arteries. This was taken as evidence that even
paleo diets are arteriosclerotic.
