Today's Topic: Low-Carb Judgement

To go along with the two studies we described earlier this week, an
editorial on reduced carbohydrate diets for weight loss points out
that very-low-carb diets should not be dismissed.  The most important
question concerns long-term experience and, unfortunately for
advocates of this diet, no studies show clear benefits at one year.
The editorialist suggests that limiting fat or advocating exercise
should be tried.

The editorial points out that low-carb diets are also low-calorie
diets.  But if people willingly eat less, then that is a benefit.
However, the editorial does not discuss the low levels of several
nutrients such as calcium, folic acid and dietary fiber in low-carb
diets.  Deficiencies of any of these can lead to long term health
problems.  The editorial was in the May 18, 2004 Annals of Internal
Medicine.

HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: The writer cautions against
unlimited amounts of meat and fatty foods.  The editorial also
suggests replacing refined grain products with whole grains.  This is
good advice but is not new; current advice is that half our grain
servings should be whole grain.  Many of the refined grain products
like cake, cookies, pies, soft drinks (the sugar is from corn),
doughnuts, and so on are major contributors to our calorie intake.
Those are snack foods and, by definition, should be a minor portion of
your food intake.
