"In the beginning, I started a marathon..." vs. "In the beginning of my starting a marathon...".  
 
Who won the marathon?  And how long did it take them?

Very true. A perfect example is the first line of the Bible. "In the
beginning God created the heaven and the earth".

Most Hebrew scholars will say that "In the beginning of God's creation of
the heaven and earth" is a more accurate translation.
The second translation indicates a longer time span.
