<< If the carnivorous hunting wolf will eat this much
vegetation, then surely the early omnivorous human
would consume similar percentages of fruit/vegetables
(particularly if our teeth and gut are better suited)?

In "Give Your Dog a Bone," Ian Billinghurst
(Australian veterinarian) describes dogs (canis lupus
familiaris) and their wolf ancestors as
carnivore/hunter/scavenger/vegetarian/opportunist:

"This means a dog can eat practically anything in the
way of food. In fact so far as eating goes, your dog
is one of the most versatile creatures on earth."

"...whatever you can feed other animals can usually be
fed to dogs. Whatever you can safely feed to humans
may be fed to dogs."

In other words, they're omnivores who are primarily
carnivorous.

The article's reference to wolves eating 65% of their
diet as fruit in the summer is consistent with their
ability to take advantage of whatever is available to
them at any given time. Summer is only 3 months of
the year -- if factored over an entire year, that
percentage would no doubt be much lower.
