Two of my 3 grandsons were fed a specialty formula called Alimentum. It is
made from amino acids. There are some competing products that make similar
claims but they are derived from milk and caused problems for the elder of
these two children. Both are healthy and happy at ages 14 and 11.

The elder child was in hospital for some time and his mother (my daughter)
was told that their EEG showed that he was blind and the neurologist told
her that he was unlikely to ever walk or talk. They argued strenuously
trying to persuade my daughter not to try these other formulas. They felt
that she just needed to accept that he had cerebral palsy. They told my
daughter that using such formulas would cause my grandson to be unable to
eat a normal diet throughout his life.

Within a day of starting Pregestimil, my grandson's eyes started tracking
objects moved across his field of vision. His diarrhea also abated. More
improvement came with the switch to Alimentum. You Before the switch to
Alimentum, he was terribly collicky, he had an awful time with gas. Now,
when he makes a mistake on the diet, he feels terribly anxious and moody,
and his complexion gets bad.

14 years later, this grandson visits us for about one week every summer. We
golf together (I'm not saying that we golf well :-) we go fishing, race
go-karts, and generally play. He is a gifted musician and he is articulate
beyond his years. He does reasonably well in school, although he has
problems with organization, deadlines, and motivation.

You might suggest that they try these formulas. I would recommend going to
the Alimentum first, just because Pregestimil (when my daughter tried it)
was derived from milk.

If the mother of this child wants to talk to my daughter, please email me
off list and I'll provide her telephone number.
best wishes,
Ron
