If I'm visiting the zoo Gorillas seem to me like the ultimate
machos - like they are behaving sometimes.
Some other things are macholike too.
Some bit males "collect" more female mates (harem)
which they protect and observe carefully.
They look so strong and their sex lasts only for *seconds*.
Its not necessary longer, because no others male competition
(outer than outer aggresstion) is to be feared.
Jared Diamond (The Third Chimpanzee) describes these
differences very thoroughly. And also why the chimps - whith
a similar diet - have such a much different sex life.

The absolute "winners" on the scale are the small chimps (bonobo)
as Todd pointed out very striking.
They seem to do not more else as this.
Beleave, their (and gorillas) diet is natures best for them.

Paula, i disagree to this sentence several times:
1.Digestion doesnt mean breaking it down onto water or hard blocks.
Big amounts of fecal material are a natural consequence of a diet
large in fibers. This is healthy and satisfying and protects your
colon and intestine by promoting a healthy bacteria population
and cleaning it from mircotoxins.
2.Why should plants (like gorillas veggies) produce much gas?
I personaly hardly experience even little, even if eating things
things like legumes or cabbage.
I'm sure that a healthy gut bacteria composition is the key.

Gorillas in the wild (sex and food)

Wally, the last common anchestor, for gorillas even further away
than for chimps, were wood inhabitating primates.
They were certaionly not prey-eaters.

7 million years ago primates were eating mainly fruits.
since 30 mio years (these timeline from books AND from Ward N.).
(at http://www.beyondveg.com/nicholson-w/hb/hb-interview1c.shtml )
You can call some (2-7) percent of insects omnivorious,
thats still exact. But much closer to vegetarian than to anything else.

Thats not a kritic on your path, Rachel
but gas IMO indicates a inhealthy gut (and inadequate food).
Any sugars promote it very much (esp. togeather with fiber).
Much fiber and some strong herbs can help against it.
Strange: milk sugar (lactose!) helps most digestion problems
I think this is because milk sugar is in the milk for the main
purpose to support the healthy gut bacteria population.

I cannot question that. The *common* way of
switching to a vegetarian diet may cause this (is it soy?).
Vegetarian diets are also recommended by some to lower aggression
and gain a more peaceful mind. (?)
Is "sex drive" a kind of aggression? I personally, don't think so.
More a passion.
