I suspect that a large part of the problem with sugar, in particular, is
the concentration.  One of the big differences between herbs and
pharmaceuticals is amount/concentration.  Or perhaps concentration and
"purification."

I used to work with a guy from Bolivia.  He spent quite a while, growing
up, in the jungles and mountains.  From his own observations, chewing cocoa
leaves was far less additive that cocaine.

Then again, does sugar have any impact on things like endorphins?
