I too wrestle endlessly with the dairy issue.  Women of Crete for example 
have low breast cancer rates yet cheese and yoghurt are prominent in their 
cuisine.  My grandmother was Italian, had children at the alleged "protective" age 
but moved to America in her 20s and later developed breast cancer.  She went on 
to live to just shy of 100.  She was never overweight but ate a mixed diet, 
some processed foods but teensy portions. Her two sisters never moved to 
America, never had children and never got breast cancer.  Both of them lived to 
their 90s.  All of these women ate the dairy products that are featured so 
prominently in Italian cuisine -- cheeses.  When people speak of the Med diet being 
low in fat I want to laugh.  I have no idea what Med type diet is low in fat. 
The French, Italians, Greeks and  Spaniards all eat plenty of dairy and have 
done so for centuries.   I think that dairy is not paleo in any form but if it 
makes the diet possible to maintain as a lifestyle, then that is a personal 
choice.  For those who have to eat a limited carbohydrate paleo style regime due 
to blood sugar problems etc, dairy products certainly add variety and 
convenience.  I will add that Austrian physician Wolfgang Lutz, MD -- author of Life 
Without Bread, still practices medicine in his mid 80s has kept meticulous 
records of thousands of his patients.  He mentions that breast cancer was the most 
prevalent cancer in his female patients and those that followed the 
carbohydrate restriction did not suffer metastases.  The only exception to this was one 
patient who was found to already have metasteses at the time of her 
diagnoses.  His low-carb plan does not omit dairy and in fact he considers butter to be 
an important fat for health.  This is just his observation of patients he has 
followed for decades -- but I found it interesting.  Anyway, dairy is not 
paleo by any stretch so if one wants to be a purist -- just omit it entirely.
