The book is out by now, and the author's citations / references within the
book have been checked and found in many cases to be fraudulent and not
actual quotes.  They appear to have been made up because they used the names
of prominent scientists who hadn't said the words Tierny put in their
mouths, but he wanted the appearance of strong support within the field to
bolster his position.  He has by his own actions in writing this book
thoroughly discredited himself, and in the process created a groundswell of
renewed respect for the men he attacked.

This was a vicious personal attack posing as reportage and has offended many
scientists.  If someone has to make up outrageous lies to make someone else
unpopular, what does that say about the liar and the intended victim?
