The following is a net version of an article in the local newspaper today:

Scientists at New Mexico State Univ. in Las Cruces, NM, are breeding a new bloodline of desert-adapted cows. They are 5/8 Black Angus and 3/8 Brahman. After looking closely at other breeds - the Tuli breed from East Africa and the Senepol breed from the Virgin Islands, the scientists chose the Brangus as the best desert-adapted breed for this area.

The cattle are now roaming the university's Chihuahuan Desert Rangeland Research Center, which is roughly 100 square miles.

Quoting: "Whereas on a typical Midwestern farm a producer might run two to 10 cows on an acre, on Chihuahuan Desert rangeland, two to 10 cows might be on 640 acres."
