One of the more nomadic Native American tribes (I
can't remember the name) did just that. During their
travels they would plant in various locations, knowing
they would return to that location at a later date.
One of the more ingenious planting combinations they
had was corn/beans in the same hole (very un-paleo, I
know). The corn would grow upright and provide a
"pole" for the bean plant to climb.
