Rick:  Do a Google search on "Pilates."  I do several exercises trying to
rehab a hip problem;  it is my understanding that this form of exercise and
the involved equipment have been very standard in the dance community for
decades before becoming quite the recent fad.  Many of the web sites you
find will explain the principle and "long muscles"  are often touted
(although I think this is a bit of hype in that genetic tendency probably is
a primary determinant of the form that well exercised muscle takes.
