I suspect it's cheaper to use fake animals (like the crab) for a brief shot
than live animals. The fake one can be manufactured to order and will require
only one "take" (one camera session) as long as the human actor doesn't screw
up the shot. Then again, I've also heard of chimps and other animal actors who
could meet their mark in one take (do the scene per the director's orders the
first time right).
