It is the clot forming substance in blood. It aggregates (polymerizes) into
fibrin strands when acted upon by thrombin, an enzyme that is activated in
the coagulation mechanism, usually triggered by tissue factor or contact
with
foreign surfaces.  The usual fibrinogen concentration is 3 mg/ml plasma,
which would correspond to about 0.3%.
