I would check out the following 2 books: Atkins Diet Revolution (for a
detailed explanation of ketosis); and Drs. Michael and Mary Dan Eades book:
Protein Power (great explanation of insulin resistance). Dr. Eades
recommends an ADEQUATE PROTEIN, low carbohydrate diet, and the book has
tables you can use to compute the exact amount of protein your body needs
per day. I have found that I've gained muscle on this diet, without any
effort or special training. If you want to be sure that you're in Ketosis
you can purchase ketosticks at your drugstore to test your urine. It's very
easy. Also if you're in ketosis you should be drinking more water to flush
out the ketones.

I hope this helps. Email me if you have any other questions
