Which suggests that paleo-quality food might become even more scarce than
it is.

Climate – not humans – caused ancient extinction – May 2005 - New studies
refute the idea that humans killed off the mammoths and saber-toothed
tigers in North America about 12,000 years ago. This also holds true in
Australia , where the extinction of great beasts such as the marsupial
lion and the 800 pound lizard occurred at roughly the same time.

Some studies show that humans arrived in the areas at about the same time,
which has led to "guilt by association." But Clive Trueman, from the
University of Portsmouth, UK, and colleagues argue that plummeting
temperatures played a significant role.

The researchers think humans simply would not have had the hunting
technologies to take out so many large creatures. "You try taking out a
two-to-three-tonne wombat with a pointy stick,” says Trueman.

The studies are published this week in the Proceedings of the National
Academy of Sciences (PNAS) and in Memoirs of the Queensland Museum.
