How big is a 'serving' and what is it based on?

A Paleo serving would probably be a full piece of fruit (apple, pear,
avocado), a double handful of nuts, a bunch of grapes, a hand of bananas
etc.

I remember reading a Zone recipe which asked for six slivered almonds.
Six! I know Sears is not paleo but this sort of spurious precision makes
me hold the writer in ridiculed contempt!
