When the immune system senses a cold it blocks the air passage through the nose and produces fever to raise the temperature of the nasal tissues to a level not favorable to the virus.  Nose clips at the first sign of a cold have been shown clinically to be very helpful in speeding this natural process.  [ And then I wonder why no one will date me.....]
