Yes.  Tropical islanders eat yam and taro roots, taro tops (like
spinach), lots and lots of breadfruit, long eggplant,, coconuts -- both
juice and meat -- star apples, lots of things you aren't familiar with.
What you see in the store and restaurant is probably not typical of what
people eat at home. They probably garden some and raise fruit trees near
their homes.

During an El Nino drought in the 1980s the graduating class of Truk High
School (Truk Island) sailed to Guam for a graduation trip on a tiny
interisland steamer.  There was no water available on Truk, so they
brought with them several locked roomsful of drinking coconuts, and
lived off those until they arrived on Guam.  Check out the mileage on
your Atlas!  They seemed to think there was nothing special about
setting off for the voyage with only drinking coconuts and no water.
