I disagree,  hunter-gatherers more than likely did eat  leaves, fruits,
roots, etc. (hence the word gatherer) If meat was scarce, plants and
leaves were the next best thing to sustain life.  Even if meat was not
scarce, the bright colors of a fruit bearing tree, bush or plant would
attract attention, HG's would want to try these, just as a child seeing
them would want to try them. It was a matter of trial and error.  If an
HG dropped dead from one particular fruit, berry or leave, eventually the
others would know not to eat of that fruit.
