Mary,  I have not followed this thread being under the occupational gun and
do not know if this has already been stated...but:
A ruptured appendix is a medical emergency of the highest order.  Beyond
"mere" appendicitis, the appendage has literally perforated allowing
intestinal contents and flora to spill into the peritoneal cavity where the
bacteria explosively proliferate.  The use of antibiotics in this context is
mandatory (along with other interventions) and this is an entirely different
situation relative to the concern of overuse and misuse of antibiotics for
viral colds, acne, and other non-emergent maladies.
