My doctor prescribed Zovirax.open the capsule, put a little powder in my hand,
put a drop of water on it and put the solution right on the cold sore.

Zovirax (acyclovir) is available as a suspension, it might be
easier/safer to use in this form. Its an anti-viral compound.

Some of you talked about putting ointments on the sores.

Here is my experience: My doctor prescribed Zovirax. It is a capsule
and seemed to prevent them from erupting if taken while the sore was
still "tingling." But it caused me to have headaches so now I open the
capsule, put a little powder in my hand, put a drop of water on it and
put the solution right on the cold sore. This is difficult when they
are in your mouth but dry the area as well as you can. It still helps.
It will keep it from erupting but it still takes a couple of weeks for
the scab to go away. And the best part is NO PAIN!!!

Mostly my sores are in my nose so it is easier to apply. Why the
water? Breathing the powder also causes me to have headaches.
