I have to agree about being vigilant in hospitals, even more so when your
kids are concerned. The American hospital we were in had a hard time
accommodating our request for soy milk giving us Lactese three times in a
row. We had to special request it: it was not on the menu.

I also spoke with the dietitian and I seemed to know more than she did about
where dairy could hide and in the end, she was no help whatsoever. I was
surprised: this was a "world class" teaching hospital with a fantastic
pediatric wing (wood floors, computers and Internet and cable for each bed)
but there was little recognition of an allergic diet; the boy in the room
next door to me had a special meals for kidney problems but there seemed to
be no way to get a dairy free meals. Trying to get a safe breakfast for
myself (since I was still nursing, I was also avoiding dairy) in their
cafeteria was a complete disaster. With the rise of allergies in children,
I was shocked.

When my son was in our local children's hospital back in Canada, the menu
had two choices of soy milk (vanilla or chocolate). You ordered by phone
whenever you wanted within certain hours and that staff bent over backwards
to make sure that the food was safe. It was such a relief! And the entire
hospital was declared nut free, latex free and scent free.

So when you check in, make sure to check it out!
