I have been following the "High Calorie Foods" thread today..a topic
that really hits home at our house. My son Aaron was 21 lbs at six
months (moose!), but when he started solid foods (hidden dairy) he lost
weight. It was almost a year later when we finally got a diagnosis, and
finally understood where to look for the problem foods (as many others
have indicated, medical providers were no help, and in our case were
even destructive by blaming us...saying we were not feeding him because
I was afraid to make him fat UGH!!!)

Anyway, even after we removed the offending foods, having done the
research and learning that many on this list have done, Aaron still did
not gain wt. Finally found a doctor who helped us understand that our
boy's immature and sensitive digestive system would need some time to
heal. He felt that Aaron was not absorbing his food properly due to the
prior exposure to the hidden dairy proteins in the foods he ate. There
was an effort by us and two doctors to get our insurance company to pay
at least a portion of the supplement Neocate1+, a non-dairy elemental
formula for children over one year who were having these kinds of
problems. The cost to provide it on our own would have been over $100.
a week, so we were told. We do not have that much money, so we
supplemented his solid diet with a commercially available soy infant
formula, and with a simpler diet...less heavy grains and legumes.

Regarding soy milks...when my older boy was beginning to use soy milks,
I was able to get a full fat soy milk from Westsoy. In the past two
years, I have found it impossible to get. All the soy milks are low in
fat, so I add flaxseed oil in minute amounts, and it does help.

Anyway, after six months of giving Aaron's "innards" a little support
(with the formula), and rest,(with a milder diet) he did begin to gain
weight. At that six month mark, he had been in the 95th percentile for
ht and wt. By a year, he had fallen below the growth chart. Now, at
two and a half, he is back on the charts at the 35th to 50th
percentile. It was a lot of hard work, and BOY did the information and
support on this list help!!
We also used homeopathic and chiropractic therapies to help in healing.
Chiropractic appeared to help with restoring his appetite, which was
very low at various times in the saga.

Hang in there, Dana. Good luck to you. If you think there is anything
in my experience that could help you, please feel free to email me
directly. Dale Robin Lockman
