My son is now 2 1/2 years old. When he was 10 days old he ran an
unexplained fever for a couple of days. The doctor was never able to
make a diagnosis on what it was, but I now think it is possible it was
connected to his milk allergy. He was exclusively breastfed for the
first few months, but he seemed to have a stuffy nose almost continually.
I had never heard of food allergens going through the breastmilk, so I
didn't make any kind of connection with that. I also noticed that his
stools seemed to be very runny and have a lot of mucus in them, which I
attributed to the continually stuffy nose. At 4 months of age, when I
introduced him to rice cereal, I mixed it with milk-based formula. It
took me 3 days of trying to even get any into his mouth. He just
screamed and fought it whenever I tried to feed him. I just figured he
wasn't used to eating from a spoon. On the third attempt I managed to
get probably a half a teaspoon of cereal mixed with formula into his
mouth before he was screaming so hard I gave up. Within a few minutes he
had severe hives all over his face. Luckily Benadryl cleared it up
fairly quickly and his reaction didn't get any worse than that.
I went back to exclusively breastfeeding him (except that I was
still consuming all kinds of dairy products) until he was 6 months old.
He continued to get hives even though he was exclusively breastfed. We
later discovered that he was getting hives on contact with anyone who had
recently consumed dairy products. For example, if his sisters would
drink milk for supper and then kiss him later in the evening he would get
hives everywhere they had kissed him. Or if someone held a piece of
cheese and then held him he would get hives everywhere they had touched
him.
I took him to an allergist at 6 months of age. The allergist did
a skin test and it came up positive for all 4 milk proteins. He has been
strictly dairy-free ever since. Hope this helps.

Sandy
