While I would agree on this for an adult case, I think when you are
dealing with infants only a month old (or so) the problem isn't nearly
so deeply entrenched.  Initial changes can usually be seen within 7 days
but will always take a long time to fully clear up.  We (a scared Mom
wanting an answer) are only looking for that initial change with these
parameters.  If we get improvement we know we are on the right track.

Be sure to mention to new Mom's that milk proteins stay in her body for
quite a long time, but not in such high concentrations that a lot will
be passed into the breastmilk.  Both the baby and the Mom need time to
clear out.  So if Mom goes off dairy for 14 days and stopped passing
dairy proteins around day 7, then Baby still needs 7 days to clear his
body of all proteins.  One slip up in the kitchen can mean starting all
over again.
