Re: Kathy's Antibiotic difficulties
Boy, do I resonate with that story! Thanksgiving 1995-Aaron is 7 months
old, still nursing, and neither of us do dairy. We go to New York to
visit family for the holiday. Aaron and I have colds, and see the
doctor just before we leave, and he puts us both on antibiotics, which I
almost never do because I am so allergic to almost all the kinds there
are. Thanksgiving morning, Aaron is red and swollen from head to toe,
so off to the emergency room we go. The E.R. in NYC on a major
holiday...not a recommended experience. Doc says allergy...consider him
allergic to what both he and I were taking, AND the suspension prbably
has a milk derivative (this was a Jewish hospital and an Orthodox Doc,
so I think he knew about it related to kashrut concerns). He says there
is no way to know exactly what gave him the reaction, but due to the
severity of it, stay away from all the possibilities indicated from this
episode(i.e the two antibiotics AND any med not absolutely certainly
dairy free). I asked how to find out if a med has dairy, and he says
ask the pharmacist, not the doc. Now, I have a great pharmacist who has
actually researched the contents of flouride tablets with me, as we are
on well water and use flouride as a supplement. The company cannot
assure that the tabs are dairy free, so we continue with baby drops,
which are safe. A good pharmacist can really help...even with over-the
counter stuff.
Good luck to you...I hope you both feel better soon. And, by the way,
before you treat ear infections with antibiotics again, look at the NIH
info on treating ear infections, and now even the American Academy of
Pediatrics recommends against it except in very specific circumstances.
I have had to be very forceful in my discussions of this with doctors,
as their knee-jerk response, despite all the research to the contrary,
is to treat ears with antibiotics.

Sorry for the digression from milk issues, but I just had to stick that
in, Mom to Mom.
