Years ago, I suspected that my son was hyperactive, but never had him
evaluated. Instead, I put him on the Feingold diet. Several friends of
mine had sons who were diagnosed as hyperactive and the diet worked for
them. There were several books on the subject at that time but I'm not
sure what you can find now. Basically, I eliminated all artificial colors
and flavors (which are from coal tar derivitives) and preservatives. He
responded to the diet and I kept him on it for approximately 1 year from
age 4-5. Since then he has eaten anything he wants but since our family
has many allergies and sensitivities, I suspect that symptoms might
reappear sometime in his life. At 46 I just realized that I can't eat
dairy and I'm considering allergy testing to find out what else I shouldn't
eat.
