In my son's case, I think the problem is an allergy because he gets
skin and respiratory symptoms as well as digestive symptoms from eating
dairy. He used to scratch his skin until it bled. A small exposure will now
make his nose very stuffy, and asthma symptoms soon follow. Thankfully,
he's not anaphylactic to milk, but I still think a large glass of it could
make him pretty sick.
You make a very important point, though. For someone who can't tolerate
milk, it helps a lot to know if the problem is the sugar or the protein.
Otherwise you could either be restricting your diet unnecessarily or
risking making yourself sick.
