John Read, Models of Madness: Can "Schizophrenia" Be Prevented

The dominant biogentic ideology ignores the childhood events that can
lead to psychosis, has increased stigma, and has inhibited primary prevention.

The heightened sensitivity, unusual experiences, distress, despair,
confusion, and disorganization that are currently labeled
"schizophrenia" are not symptoms of a medical illness but are
promulgated by biological psychiatry and the pharmaceutical
industry. The causes are based in adverse childhood experiences as
are other mental health problems and psychosis is equally amenable to
primary prevention programs aimed at enhancing the safety and
emotional well-being of children and their carers.
