"Released in September by the US DoJ, "Mental Health Problems of
Prison and Jail Inmates" reported that as of mid-2005, 705,600
inmates in state prisons, 70,200 in federal prisons and 479,000 in
local jails said they had a mental health problem, representing 56
percent of state prisoners, 45 percent of federal prisoners and 64
percent of jail inmates.
"Even more troubling, more than two-thirds of state prisoners and
more than half of jail inmates said they had symptoms that met the
criteria for mania, while 15 percent of state prisoners and 24
percent of jail inmates reported symptoms of a psychotic
disorder. The DOJ report is based on inmates' recent history and
symptoms of mental disorders."
