HCA, the nation’s largest for-profit hospital operator, said today that it
had agreed to be acquired by consortium of private investors for about $21
billion.

The group of buyers is led by the family of Senator Bill Frist, the Senate
majority leader. His father, Thomas Frist Sr., and his brother, Thomas F.
Frist Jr., founded HCA.
