"Finally, in the nineteenth century, a new cage emerged that now
included everyone and held all in its grasp. It resulted from the
combined powers of many builders. All those searching for a new
medicine found themselves in the cage of this new science. They went
inside and closed the door. The last one in turned off the light
outside. Now the only light was inside. The bars were borrowed from
chemistry, physics, and technology, and they stood very close
together. Hardly any inmates close to the bars looking out could
discern even a pale shimmer. Everyone was inside. The bars were
strong and sturdy, imparting safety and stability. The cage itself
was illuminated by plausibility. The lamps had names like immunology
or the germ theory of disease. Once in a while a light bulb went
out, and a new one was put in."
