Tombong,
You have said it all. Some time ago I made a commentary on this forum about
the need for us to agree to disagree respectfully on issues that political
in nature and some guys made funny remarks and laughed about it. Anyway a
lot has been said already and I just want to remind friends and readers
some of our traditional Gambian Values and Culture with regards to Time,
Competition, Control, Social Interaction and individual freedom. This is an
attempt to begin the debate on the fast disappearance of several of our
Gambian values and behavioral patterns as a result of American influence
and western media. The deeply held values and beliefs shared by a people
cannot be accurately captured by the written word. Despite this difficulty,
I believe this reminder will help the reader to think and become more aware
of social changes that are taking place in the Gambia. I was in the Gambia
in January and I saw of myself the important differences between the Gambia
then and the Gambia now. My friends the behaviors of our younger generation
in the streets of Gambia are not very encouraging and pleasant. This has
nothing to do with politics, on this forum we love to politicize every
single issue but we got to be careful with this one.

The Meaning of Time in traditional Gambian Culture: Time was measured by
natural events. Having patience, showing respect and caring for others are
of more importance than being "on time" as measured by a clock.

Competition Among People: Can be fierce competition between groups but
individuals should not seek "stardom" or want to be the center of
attention. The team or group can be outstanding but not the individual.
Emphasis on "we" rather than "I". Self-promotion is viewed with disdain.

Control: Emphasis is on living in harmony with nature and adapting to
others. To control or manipulate others is offensive behavior. Reluctant to
interfere in the lives of other people. Resentment toward those that
attempt to impose their will, tendency toward fatalism, ( i.e., " what is
meant to happen will happen and you cannot change it.")

Social Interaction: Sharing and giving are valued more than getting and
keeping. Materialism is viewed as selfishness. The individual who collects
many material possessions is viewed with suspicion.

Individual Freedom: Individual will look to the extended family and elders
for guidance and direction. Decisions are shaped by the preferences of
others. Being loyal to the group and avoiding conflict, especially within
extended family, is more important than the exercise of personal
preferences.

Look ahead for volume #2

Thanks for reading
