GAMBIA TOURISM AUTHORITY

VACANCIES

Applications are invited from suitably qualified persons to fill the
following senior positions in the newly created Gambia Tourism
Authority(GTA). The Authority has been set up to encourage and promote the
development of the tourism industry which is a major contributor to the
Gambian economy.

The officers being recruited will be key members of the Senior Management
Team who will  report to the Director General.

1. Director of Finance & Administration / Board Secretary

DUTIES:
This officer will be required to perform the following duties:

¨ Develop and oversee the functioning of the financial and administrative
systems and procedures necessary to permit the Authority to operate
efficiently and effectively;

¨ Manage the Authority's human resources including selection and
recruitment, staff appraisal and development;

¨ Develop and implement an effective public relations policy;

¨ Serve as Secretary to the Board of Directors responsible for arranging and
providing support services at Board meetings;

¨ Handle matters of general nature any other work-related duties assigned by
the Director General.

QUALIFICATION
Candidates for the position will be required to possess the following:

¨ A good degree in Business Administration or equivalent financial
qualification or together with strong analytical and financial skills
including at least five years experience in managing/controlling a large
budget;

¨ Excellent management, administrative and communication skills;

¨ The ability to develop and implement an effective public relations
strategy in order to promote the corporate image of the Authority;

¨ Experience in developing and implementing effective  HR policies;

¨ Must be ICT literate.

2. Director of Marketing

DUTIES:
This officer will be responsible for:

¨ Developing coherent marketing strategies and plans to promote The Gambia
as a tourist destination and successfully implementing these policies;

¨ Identifying and assessing new business opportunities in the tourist
sector;

¨ Preparing yearly marketing plans and developing and implementing market
research surveys into  tourism related activities;

¨ Identifying existing as well as new products that can be developed and
marketed to attract tourists;

¨ Assisting with the development of marketing skills and cooperative
initiatives within the tourist industry;

¨ Using information technology and modern media marketing techniques to
advertise and promote The Gambia as a tourist destination;

QUALIFICATION:
Candidates for the position will be required to possess the following:

¨ Training to degree level and / or an internationally recognised marketing
or business management qualification with at least five years experience at
senior management level in a marketing environment;

¨ Experience in the international marketing of consumer goods or tourism
products;

¨ The ability to communicate effectively and work in partnership with a
broad range of people in the tourist industry;

¨ Excellent team leadership skills;

¨ Must be ICT literate.

3. Director of Quality and Development

DUTIES:
This officer will be responsible for:

¨ The administration of  the classification, licensing and quality control
of tourist establishments and services;

¨ Promoting the development of suitable products, facilities and services in
the tourism sector;

¨ Designing strategies and plans for the development of the Tourism
Development Areas and providing advice to potential investors;

¨ Overseeing the planning and allocation of land in the Tourist Development
Areas;

¨ Monitoring physical and infrastructural developments in the Tourist
Development Areas;

Serve as Secretary to the Product Development and Licensing and
Classification Standing Committees.

QUALIFICATION:
The primary responsibility of this officer is to bring about development of
tourist facilities and products. The successful candidate will have a
knowledge of investment, planning and physical development. Other essential
qualifications are:

¨ Training to degree level or an equivalent professional qualification in
hotel management or a similar discipline,  with at least 5 years experience
at senior management in a business or public sector environment;

¨ A sound understanding of regulatory economic issues and the existing legal
and licensing framework  in the tourism industry;

¨ Possess research and analytical skills necessary to determine customer
requirements;

¨ Proven ability to build and manage customer relationships in a business or
public sector environment;

¨ Excellent presentation and interpersonal skills;

¨ Must be ICT literate.

4. Director of Tourism Human Resources

DUTIES:
The primary function of the Director of Tourism Human Resources is to assist
in developing the manpower capacity of the industry both in terms of skills
and numbers. He will be responsible for:

¨ Undertaking, in consultation with the Tourism Training Advisory Committee,
continuous assessment of the manpower training needs of the industry in
terms of numbers and range of skills required;

¨ Liaising with universities, colleges, other appropriate institutions and
industry on the nature and types of training programmes and courses relevant
to the manpower needs of the tourism sector;

¨ Organising and, where appropriate, arranging for the provision,
implementation and certification of education and training programmes
including vocational training for those employed in the industry as  well
as for new entrants;

¨ Assisting qualified Gambians in the hotel and tourism industry to receive
international training to senior management level and ensuring the
development and implementation of bilateral exchange training programmes in
the tourism sector;

¨ Serve as Secretary to the Tourism Training Advisory Committee.

QUALIFICATION
Candidates for the position will be required to possess the following:

¨ A degree level or equivalent qualification with a background in education
or training together with an understanding of curricula development and the
organisation and management of training. Experience of the tourist industry
would be helpful but not essential;

The candidate should also demonstrate:

¨ Experience in building and managing effective working relationships at
different operational  levels within  an educational or comparable
organisational environment;

¨ Ability to meet agreed objectives in defined timeframes;

¨ Good team leadership skills.

¨ Strong written and oral communication skills;

¨ Must be ICT literate.
