NEWSI 'M ALIVE AND HEALTHY -SAYS MP SAINEY MBYE, AS DISPELS RUMOURS
IRIN NEWS-->BY YERO JALLOW

---------------------------------

October 2, 2005
The newly elected Upper Saloum MP Sainey Mbye says he is alive and healthy contrary to widespread rumours that he died of a snake bite.

Speaking to ALLGAMBIA'S Yero Jallow on the line to Banjul, Mr. Mbye who also confirmed hearing such wild rumours said" "You are talking to Sainey Mbye and i am alive and healthy."

Sainey who was accompanied by his supporters left his home village Bati Sunday morning to meet Gambia's President Yahya Jammeh says he was not surprised by such rumours going beyond Gambia's frontiers adding "Before the campaign they said i was beaten by a snake and now they said I'm dead."

When asked what prompted such a rumour, MP Mbye said he doesn't know those behind such ill conceived rumours and what their objectives were. But was quick to add" I know those behind such rumours wishing me death are not APRC supporters."

In a statement broadcast on state television and radio, the government Sunday dispelled the rumour on MP Sainey Mbye's death. The statement says the MP was alive and there was no element of truth in such rumours. "The news of my death was also dispelled in Gambia Radio and TV today." MP Mbye told our reporter.

Commenting on his recent victory, Sainey Mbye says he was very delighted in winning Hamat Bah this time round. 'Hamat had been here for ten years and people of Saloum haven't seen any development, so they decided to vote for me." he said.

Sainey Mbye however, declined to comment on the recent sacking of the three alkalos including Hamat's father in Upper Saloum . "That is not my concern" he said.

Further quizzed about the recent vote buying reports led by APRC big wigs such as, Yankuba Touray alias "Jali Touray" Mbye said "I am not aware of such."

MP Mbye maintains that the by elections were free and fair.

On a final note, our attempt to talk to Sainey Mbaye, was facilitated by his brother Dawda Mbye who is resident in Raleigh, North Carolina. Mr. Dawda Mbye volunteered to give us contact information for his brother in Banjul. He also maintains that his brother is alive.
