Sanusi, others:

I agree with your notion that the current UDP saga is
a classic power tussle. If for nothing but experience,
it is subconsciously teaching Gambians an important
lesson in democracy: the ability to take on your
leader and not be fired for it.
It is a first and it ought to be encouraged. As to
the immediate damage it is causing the party, well,
that's hard to gauge right now. Time will indeed tell
if the Gambian electorate and public has the stomach
for such intra-party squabbles. Gambians are currently
confused and somewhat awestruck, as they should be, by
what is considered hubris by Juwara.
But you know what, Gambian socio/political
sensibilities need to be awakened. This to me
represents the struggle between our nation's
Mansa/subjects relationship and that of a
vibrant/modern democratic dispensation. Leadership is
not a birth right nor is it anointed by God; the
ability to lead is forged through moral courage, high
ethical standards and a social conscience. None of the
leaders of Gambia's various political parties should
expect to lead their parties for life.
May be it is time for Darboe to step aside and let
someone else assume the mantle. The current tumult
just might usher in such a reality.
Chaotic, yes, but eventually, it may be exactly what
the doctor ordered for the UDP and the future of a
viable democratic opposition in the Gambia.

Have a healthful weekend.

Abdou
