IEC reduces counting centres to 28

Reports reaching the Daily Observer from the Independent Electoral
Commission (IEC) headquarters revealed that the counting centres for the
October 18 Presidential election have now been reduced to 28.

It could be recalled that IEC formally announced that there would be
forty-two counting centres country wide. However, when our reporter went to
the IEC headquarters to find out how true the reports were, the
communication officer of the IEC Mr Said Usuf confirmed the reduction.

When asked the reason behind the decision, Mr Usuf said "when the IEC
chairman, Gabriel Roberts announced that there would be forty-two counting
centres for this October 18 Presidential election, a number of
considerations were not taken into account. One of which was the human,
security and financial requirements involved. Mr Usuf further said all the
political parties had been informed about it. He said the general public was
also aware of the reduction, "because the IEC chairman, Gabriel Roberts'
statement was broadcast on the Gambia Radio and Television Services (GRTS)."
