The first sentence of the second to last paragraph should read:If nothing is done to contain global warming by reducing the level of green gases in the atmosphere, scientist project that climate change will be greater than any climate change experienced over the last thousand years.

Dear Folks,

Allow me at first to thank Mrs Hernlund for her previous sendings on climate change. As she has made it clear, the recent intentions of the United States not to support the Kyoto protocol on climate, makes it increasingly neccesary to table this subject for discussion as it concerns the future of the planete earth our common home.I intend to carry out this discussion in two parts.Part one deals with the background knowledge and the concept of climate change.Part on the other hand deals with The Gambia in respect to climate change.I think some will agree me that the subject of climate is a global issue worthy of discussion especially the part that deals with The Gambia in respect to climte change.

PART ONE

BASIC CONCEPTS AND BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE ON CLIMATE CHANGE

At times in regions of cold climate, when outside temperatures becomes unfouvarable for plant growth, special structures(Houses) of glass are built for this purposes.Radiation emanating from the sun can easily pass through the glass of the house to the surface of the earth. However, radiation from the surface of the earth does not easily pass through the glass of the house back to space. This results in some radiation being trapped inside the glass house thus increasing the temperatures inside the house, making it warmer. As a result, the temperature inside the house becomes favourable for plant growth whiles temperatures outside the house remains too cold.Such a house is call a GREEN HOUSE.

The earth's atmosphere also acts like a green house. There are trace gases like carbon dioxide, carbon monooxide, oxygen, methane etc present in the atmosphere aswell as dust and other particles. These trace gases and particles act like a blanket over the atmosphere.Radiation from the sun passes through this blanket to the earth's surface. The earth releases this radiation in the form of heat, most of which is trapped by the blanket of trace gases and particles in the atmosphereThis results in the warming of the earth surface. The trace gases of the atmosphere in this way act like a green house and because of this they are refer to as GREEN HOUSE GASES.The warming of the earth and it's atmospheredue due to green house gases is refer to as GREEN HOUSE EFFECT.Thank's to this effect that life on earth is possible.Without it, the earth's temperature would have been 15°c below zero, just like in some of your freezers for food storage.

Due to the activities of man, mainly as a result of industrialisation, there continues to be a built up of green house gases in the atmosphere which has cause the earth and it's atmosphere to be warmer than that from natural green house effect. This is refer to as ENHANCE GREEN HOUSE EFFECT,as it is the result of human activity and not nature. The increase in temperature of the earth and it's lower atmosphere due to enhance green house effect is refer to as GLOBAL WARMING.

If nothing is done to control global warming by reducing the level of green house gases in the atmophere, scientist project that the climate will be greater than any experienced over the last 1000years.This is the concept of CLIMATE CHANGE.

The Kyoto protocol on climate change seeks to adress this issue by the introduction of measures to reduce the emission of green house gases in the atmosphere. In the world today, the USA is one of the leading producers of green gases in the atmosphere. Therefore, for any meaningful reduction of green gases to be effected, the USA most be actively involve.

Please expect part two which deals with The Gambia in respect to climate change.
