Sister Jabou Joh and Bro Ams,

Edward Said's death is a truely sad, sad and untimely loss for all of us but especially for the Palestinians. At a time when Palestinians are undergoing so much assault on their lives as a direct result of U.S reaction, to have lost their most articulate voice is a severe blow indeed.

Edward Said has a large and strong readership and audience in Sweden. He was much loved and respected and his last visit here on a public lecture in the autumn of 2000 resulted in the press crucifying the organisers as hundreds of people could not get into the lecture hall. His book, The Text, the World and The Critic has become essential reading for literature students in many universities here, and he is constantly featured in the Swedish press.
Many of us have come to believe that Edward Said had one of the world's clearest minds.
May his soul rest in perfect peace.

Momodou S Sidibeh
