Attack On Radio 1 FM
Point News <mailto:[log in to unmask]> (Banjul)
August 11, 2000
Banjul - Radio 1 FM along Kairaba Avenue was reportedly attacked at 3 a.m.
yesterday by an unknown gang numbering seven persons, competent sources said
yesterday. The gang destroyed the outside lights, and burnt the entrance using
fuel brought in a container.
The main door to the entrance was gutted down as the proprietor, George
Chirstensen, and his watchman attempted to stop the attackers. In the process
they were sprayed, and in the ensuing moments suffered some burns while
attempting to put out the fire.
Mr. Christensen, who is an hypertensive patient, is presently being treated at
the MRC Fajara, whereas the watchman and a Disc Jockey were released following
their treatment. Some boys who were eating in a nearby "Joint" also came to the
rescue of the station, joining others to put out the fire which was extinguished
before it could reach the studios. Modou Thomas, programme manager news and
current affairs, said the motive behind the attack was yet to be established,
but that they are closely working with the police to ensure that the assailants
are apprehended.
He described the situation as "unfortunate" and said they would do everything
possible to make sure they come on air. Aja Hawa Cham, who is a frequent
contributor to the station, said she was surprised that someone would have the
evil intention to burn the station, considering the role its playing by
educating, informing and sensitising people. "We all own the radio, because it
helps all of us," she added.
An onlooker who was around said those who did such cowardly acts might be people
who are not comfortable with the way the radio is operating. "I think the radio
is playing a vital role which every good citizen should appreciate," he noted.
Another onlooker said it that was shocking that they did not have any place to
attack other than a radio station. They must have their motives," he added.
