Joe,
The sincere and selfless Gambians, who are guided by their principles
and the dictates of their conscience, will in deed take the challenge for
democracy in the Gambia.

What we want and what we are asking for is very simple: let us build
the structures and the institutions, that will ensure that each and every
Gambian lives a life of dignity, prosperity and in peace.

In order to facilitate this fundamental task, the development of a
conscious orientation of the rights and responsibilities of an informed
citizenry, necessitates the birth of a new republic.

This has been the quest for the past decades, and is the challenge
that we face now. And it is the challenge, where people of conscience motivated
by a selfless desire to end the human suffering, will transcend the barriers
of their ethnicity and their own interest, and work with others to develop a
systematic approach to address the needs and aspirations of all Gambians.

There is a natural tendency in times like this, for some people who
by accidents of birth and belonging to an entity, defined by a set of beliefs
and a shared linkage to some common attributes, solicit and appeal to these
catogeries in order to strengthen and solidify their position, to promote and
sustain the interest of the groups they represent. But at this very hour we
should resolve to stand above this.

I hope the year 2006 begins the evolution for the
institutionalization of democractic principles in the Gambia.

         Rene
