Damning Findings Against Suspended Banjul Mayor -Investigators say Jeng
was Engaged in Corrupt Practices
BY OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

October 10, 2005
Classified information reaching The ALLGAMBIAN online Newspaper, say the
recently instituted task force Committee charged with the responsibility
of investigating corruption and abuse of office charges brought against
the suspended Banjul Mayor Pa Sallah Jeng have concluded in their findings
that "the Mayor was indeed engaged in alleged corrupt practices and have
recommended for his immediate replacement."

The findings which were handed to the Secretary of State for Local
Government and lands and copied to The Gambian President Yahya Jammeh
exposes what the investigators called dubious contracts executed by the
suspended Mayor. The investigators comprised of NIA, Police and a Member
of the National Assembly Fabakary Tombong Jatta claimed that the Banjul
City Council development contracts executed by the Mayor were questionable
and were done in non transparent manner.

A highly placed source closed to the investigators told The ALLGAMBIAN
that their findings reveal that the suspended "Mayor was engaged in
activities that put the image of his office into disrepute." The source
claimed that the investigators also held that Mr. Jeng was allegedly
anticipating "kick backs" by signing such contracts executed under what
our source called "questionable circumstances."

The said report, which is yet to be communicated to The Gambian public
according to our sources will soon be released by the Local government
Minister. Reading a paragraph of the said "Pa Sallah Jeng task force
Committee findings" to The ALLGAMBIAN our source said "the investigators
have also recommended for the prosecution of the suspended Mayor.

It would be recalled that the said task force, which probed the Banjul
Mayor followed a petition signed by disgruntled BCC Councillors who
accused Jeng of corruption and abuse of office, a charge Mr. Jeng strongly
denies. Jeng from the onset insists that the charges brought against him
were totally unfounded and baseless. He even argues that this was a ploy
calculated to bring him down. BCC sources told The ALLGAMBIAN that the
suspended Mayor had a history of strained relationship with the aggrieved
councillors. "Their past demands for car and building loans were turned
down by Jeng, which seemingly angered the councillors." said an insider at
the BCC.

Highly placed sources in the heart of the Jammeh government say the regime
is still interested in controlling the BCC Mayoral seat, which they lost
in the past council Mayoral elections. Attempts to reach Mr. Jeng for
comments during the weekend failed, as he was not available for reaction
on this "damaging findings against his person."
