Majority leader urges lawyers to contest Assembly seats Written by DO Wednesday, 28 December 2005 Churchill Baldeh, majority leader of the National Assembly, has called on lawyers in the country to vie for National Assembly seats in the forthcoming legislative elections slated for next year.

Honourable Baldeh made this call in an exclusive interview with the Daily Observer in his office in Banjul.

He reasoned that having lawyers in the National Assembly would be good to safeguard human rights. “Good lawyers will be very good in the National Assembly, especially in the area of human rights protection and the freedom of people. I call on the country’s lawyers to break the record and come into politics in the interest of national development, considering the importance of the legislative organ in a democratic state. We really need strong people in the Assembly,” he said.
According to him, lawyers can combine both law and politics successfully.

He said: “If they choose to come into politics, they are highly welcomed. Any lawyer who has a good record and is willing to come into politics, would be very good.”
