The following are some extracts from FOROYAA publication - No. 64/2001.

The UDP, PPP And Assan Musa Camara Launched Their Coalition's Presidential
Candidate.

On Saturday 18th August 2001 the Brikama play ground witnessed the launching
of the presidential campaign of the coalition comprising UDP, PPP and Assan
Musa Camara.

Observers compared the launching of the UDP presidential campaign in 1996
and the present launching in 2001 and indicated that the croud present in
this year's launching is much smaller than the one in 1996.

People who were introduced at the meeting as the official delegation were
Mr. Assan Musa Camara, former leader of the GPP, Alhagie Yahya Ceesay,
former PPP minister, Lamin Kiti Jabang, former PPP minister, Alhagie Alkali
James Gaye, former PPP minister, Bakary Kuti Sanyang, former PPP minister,
Alhagie Landing Jallow Sonko, former PPP minister, Alhagie Bora Mboge,
Alhagie Alieu Kama Badgie, former PPP minister, Alhagie Dodou Taal, former
PPP MP for Banjul South, Alhagie Omar Jallow, former PPP minister, Aja
Sukaina Kah, Aja Jambandind Drammeh, Mariama Sambou, Saffie Gaye, Aja Nyima
Ndong and shyngle Nyassi.

The UDP officials were Mr. Ousainou Darbo, Mr. Kemeseng Jammeh, Mr. Dembo
Bojang and Lamin Juwara.

Tells you much about the opposition coalition, doesn't it?

In another development, PPP and NCP submitted documents for registration
whilst the IEC awaits the gazetting of the law repealing decree 89.

Foroyaa has reliably gathered that up 17th August the documents of the
parties (PPP and NCP)which were required for registration had not been
completed. Now the PPP has met all the requirements and the NCP application
is under review. However according to the paper, the registration of the two
political parties hinges on the publication of the law repealing decree 89.
In short, the procedure to follow in making laws is as follows: section 101
subsection (7) of the constitution states that: "No act of the National
assembly shall come into operation until it has been published in the
gazette..."

The procedure for making laws requires that if a bill has been passed by the
National Assembly it should be passed to the president within 30 days. After
assenting to it the president must ensure that it is published within 30
days. The bill to repeal decree 89 has been passed by the National assembly
and assented to by the president. Foroyaa has relably gathered that it is
now being published. By Moday 20th (today)August the publication of the
gazette is likely to be circulated. GPP and PDP are yet to submit any
application for registration.

Have a good day, Gassa.
