Info: As Ruling Party ZANUPF continues to crack down on Civil rights all
over Zimbabwe, a familiar rebel's voice is beginning to rise to the surface.
Zimbabwe's top pop musician, Thomas Mapfumo with his band the Blacks
Unlimited who played a seminal role in bringing about Zimbabwean
Independence and carrying ZANUPF into power some 20 years ago, now lead the
massive outcry against the 20 year old single party state it has become.

Hailing back to an earlier moment in his career, when Thomas was jailed for
his music, whose lyrics were largely credited with inspiring the rebel
Zimbabwean Forces on to victory, Mapfumo is once again the leading voice of
dissent in Zimbabwe. His latest record, Chimurenga Explosion is topping the
charts in Zimbabwe in both sales figures and radio play. This is in spite of

the fact that two of the songs have already been banned from airplay
Nationally.

An eloquent and outspoken critic of Government corruption and mismanagement,
Thomas has also become the subject of systematic government harassment since
earlier this year when he openly criticized the 20 year old government in a
series of international interviews. Both Mapfumo and the his manager in
Zimbabwe have had their telephones tapped, and Thomas has had three of his
cars seized by the government in recent raids.

Anticipating the outcome of the recent elections and potential government
reprisals for his outspokenness, Thomas fled the country with his band on
the eve of the elections and has been on tour of Europe and North America
since that time. Thomas is making his triumphant return to Seattle with a
crack twelve piece big band!

We have paired Thomas with Guinean guitar great AlphaYaya Diallo and his
band and are offering tremendous African food to all party goers from The
Kenyan Kitchen for a mere $6! Come on down to the AFRI-DANCE, a mini
festival celebrating African music, food and culture!
